Christian Videos: Movie Review for The Omen

Honestly, I don’t like movies like The Omen. To me it fits in the horror category with The Exorcist, Interview with a Vampire and The Shining. Movies that depict children as “evil” or subjected to evil are disturbing to me and they give me the creeps.

Nevertheless, many Christian parents are searching for information about this movie on the internet, so I forced myself to watch it in order to develop a movie review for this Christian parenting site.

Movie Review of the 2006 Remaking of The Omen

From a Christian parent’s perspective, The Omen is pretty graphic, contains violence and evil, and leaves a pretty disturbing feeling. I didn’t notice any adult language in it, but overall, I don’t recommend it for children of any age. In my opinion, it should not be considered in the same category as Christian videos.

As a Hollywood production, the story of The Omen is brought alive by the actors who make it an intense horror film that I am sure people who are into horror flicks can appreciate.

The main actors include:

Liev Schreiber as Robert Thorn

Julia Stiles as Katherine Thorn

Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick as Damien Thorn

Giovanni Lombardo Radice as Father Spiletto

Pete Postlethwaite as Father Brennan

Mia Farrow as Mrs. Baylock

David Thewlis as Keith Jennings

The movie of The Omen starts out with a Vatican meeting where they are discussing the signs of the time and how they fulfill prophecy leading to the end of times. They referred to prophecy that starts in Revelation 8:7 and leads to the opening of the Abyss and the release of Satan and his fallen angels.

Robert Thorn and his wife, Kathryn (Kate) Thorn had a baby and Robert was told by a priest, Father Spiletto, that the baby was stillborn and that his wife’s womb was damaged so she probably would not be able to have children in the future, but Spiletto had a plan to protect Kate from the anguish of losing her child.

He presented another newborn to Robert, saying that the child had no family and that his mother had died in the same hour that his baby was stillborn. Spiletto encouraged Robert to take this child and present it to his wife as their baby, saying that “God will forgive this little deception.” Robert accepted the alternative to breaking his wife’s heart. They named the baby Damien.

Tragic events started when Damien was a little boy, starting with the suicide of his nanny after she seems to have been put into a trance by a dog. She yelled, “It’s all for you Damien” as she jumped off the roof with a noose around her neck.

Shortly thereafter, the nanny was replaced with Mrs. Baylock who told Damien that she was there to protect him. Another priest, Father Brennan, warned Robert that the child was evil, his mother was a jackal and that he needed to accept Christ and take communion in order to defeat the beast.

Father Brennan died from being impelled by a stake that fell off the church shortly after his meeting with Robert. A photographer, Keith Jennings, also revealed to Robert a series of photos with disturbing effects that foresaw such deadly incidents.

Mrs. Baylock tried to prevent the Thorns from taking Damien to a ceremony, but Kate insisted that he go. He went ballistic when he saw the church and physically attacked Kate. From there on out, Kate started to realize that something was amiss with the child and had nightmares about him. She entered therapy and was thought to be delusional because of her thoughts that her child was evil. She realized that she was pregnant and wanted to have an abortion stating, “I want him out of me.”

After falling a great distance due to Damien’s recklessness, Kate lost the baby and was hospitalized with severe injuries. She told Robert, “Don’t let him kill me.”

Robert decided to take Father Brennan’s advice and went on a trip of discovery with Keith. On the trip they met with Spiletto and got directions to the grave of the mother of Damien and the child that was really his and Kate’s. In the graves they found the skeleton of a jackal and a baby with crushed skull, which made him realize that his child was murdered. In the meantime, Robert received the news that his wife had died, although she was murdered by Mrs. Baylock.

Next, he went to Israel to get instructions for killing the beast, but he backed out telling Keith that Damien was just a child. He decided to go through with it after Keith was decapitated in a grueling, very graphic incident and he went home and found “the mark” on Damien under his hair.

Mrs. Baylock tried to stop Robert from taking Damien, resulting her death. Robert took Damien to the altar and was prepared to kill him using the instructions that he had received when he was shot by police officers. The movie ends at Robert’s funeral with Damien, the evil child, smiling at the camera.
