Self-Concept: Yours and Theirs
Self-concept and self esteem can drastically decline due to life experiences such as bullying, concerns with
body image
, divorce, rejection, and so forth. A lot of children have a negative concept of themselves and
teen self esteem
is definitely threatened in the world that we live in.
Some parents also question their own self worth and have a negative self-concept which can be a barrier in Christian parenting,
step parenting
and
single parenting
, not to mention problems in
marriages
.
Problems with self esteem, yours or theirs, need to be taken seriously. Whether or not you have a good concept of yourself, your value is in God’s eyes. As Jesus said,
You are the ones that justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. ~ Luke 16:15
Let’s take care of the stabilizers first – parents!
If you have problem with your self esteem, you need to seek help. Counseling might be appropriate depending on your circumstances. If you are just feeling a little blue and down on yourself, you might benefit from Russ Harris’s package titled Christ-Centered Therapy: Empowering the Self.

Christ-Centered Therapy: Empowering the Self
By Russ Harris / The Haworth Press
All too often, psychology and spirituality are kept in separate boxes, lessening the power of each to work effective changes. Christ-Centered Therapy provides exercises and visual aids to help counselors and clients, including: tools to teach the self to lead effectively, worksheets to serve as a structural and visual guide to understanding, developing, and using each tool, a "parts map" for client and counselor to use collaboratively, and structural diagrams, dialogues, and illustrations that illuminate new concepts and procedures.

There is also a two-part video and workbook titled Personal Development for Success: How to Improve Your Self-Concept which might be useful.

A Snoodle's Tale: A Lesson in Self-Worth, VeggieTales DVD
By Word Entertainment Inc
There's a curious building in the middle of Snoodleburg. It's a clock tower where every fourth Tuesday at quarter past nine a tiny young Snoodle is created, complete with a pack on his back. None of the Snoodles take time to question this "mystery of life," until one day the newest Snoodle, Snoodle Doo, asks himself, "What do I look like? What am I for?"So begins this Snoodle's quest to discover the meaning of his life. He tries out the gifts he finds in his backpack: paints, a kazoo, and tiny wings. But as he tries to put these gifts to use, the other Snoodles laugh, make fun of him, and burden him with pictures of discouragement. In search of answers, the Snoodle wanders up to the top of Mt. Ginchez. There he meets a stranger who shows the little Snoodle that he is wonderfully and fearfully made in the image of his Creator. Just like this Snoodle, kids too will discover that it's God's pictures they must carry in their hearts at all time. In addition to the fairy tale about Snoodle Doo, you'll get to see the story of Dr. Jiggle and Mr. Sly, a story about a jiggly Jimmy Gourd and a mysterious, disco-dancing stranger.
