Anyone who has dealt with a strong-willed child knows how difficult it is to turn bad behavior around. But the popularity of TV programs like Supernanny and Nanny 911 shows that parents are ready to try anything to get their children to behave. Bestselling author and psychologist Dr. Kevin Leman is here to help with simple strategies any parent can carry out. This book shows you how to reverse negative behavior in your children . . . fast! With his signature wit and encouragement, Dr. Leman offers hope and real, practical, achievable strategies for regaining control and becoming the parent you always wanted to be.

My opinion of the book…

When I was at the end of my rope with one - well actually two - of my four children, I started looking for Christian parenting books that would help with the challenges before me. I ordered the book, “Have a New Kid by Friday”, by express mail. Once it came in, I read it from cover to cover in no time. Dr. Leman’s concept on parenting is eye opening and inspiring, and he is comical and down to earth to boot. It was a “can’t put it down” kind of book.

The focus of the book, printed on the cover, is “How to Change Your Child’s Attitude, Behavior and Character in 5 Days”. My son saw the book lying on my desk and he got this smirk on his face that said to me, “This is going to be a challenge.”

My suggestion: Don’t let your kids see the book!

The parenting techniques recommended by Dr. Kevin Leman are somewhat subtle, if your kids don’t know that you are trying something new. It was helpful to me in first, changing my attitude, view on parenting and breaking habits, and then dealing with the attitudes and behaviors of my children without feeling like a dictator.

All of my kids were teenagers when I got Dr. Leman’s book, so implementing the techniques was not as easy as it would be with little kids. We were so used to “power struggles” that we thought they were normal. In my opinion, these strategies are definitely helpful in teen parenting, but they would be phenomenal in the early years of Christian parenting.

About the book…

Just to let you in on the humorous talent of Dr. Kevin Leman’s presentation and what the book is about, I am going to quote the introduction from the table of contents which is labeled, “They’re Unionized…and Growing Stronger”…

”I’ve got news for you. Kids are unionized, and they’ve got a game plan to drive you bonkers. Some hedonistic little suckers of the ankle-biter battalion have even graduated to emeritus status and are holding down the hormone group division. But you don’t have to let them call the shots. I’ve got a game plan guaranteed to work. Every time.” (p. 11).

Dr. Leman recognizes bad behavior as the kids’ game plan and he presents a game plan for parents to disarm the kiddos and establish parental authority in their family while minimizing stress and common parenting worries.

The plan is divided into five days, Monday through Friday…

  • Monday deals mostly with the parents’ reaction or response to the things that the kids do or say. It was a real eye opener for me. It addresses misbehavior, motives, power struggles, habits, and best of all, how to make it stop.
  • Tuesday deals with attitude, behavior and character. Dr. Leman reveals, “The key to changing your child is changing your attitude” (p.39). It produced a lot of self discovery for me. His examples are so down to earth and relative, I am certain that you will be able to relate.
  • Wednesday helps to identify your parenting style and how your kids react to it. It focuses on developing a connection between parent and child and developing a balance in the home.
  • Thursday takes care of the common fear that a lot of parents have about “damaging the psyche” of the child. It deals with expectations and self-worth, and how it applies to parenting.
  • Friday brings the “game plan” together and prepares you for “fun day”. It reinforces all that you learned during the first four days.

In addition to the plan, the book also includes a section, “Ask Dr. Leman” that deals with specific problems and challenges that every parent faces. It is an excellent parenting guide to have around to refer to from time to time.
