All About Infant Circumcision
Making the decision of whether or not to subject your newborn baby to infant circumcision can be a difficult task, especially for new parents. I totally understand.
I had a great fear of having my baby cut on, but never the less, the health concerns outweighed the concerns for the procedure, so I opted to have my baby boy’s circumcised a few days after their birth. I knew that the Bible said something about infant circumcision, so I looked further into it before I followed the doctor’s recommendation.
What does the Bible say about infant circumcision?
Well, God’s command for infant circumcision is covered in his covenant with Abraham when he instructed in Genesis 17:10-12 which says…
This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised…
So, why did I decide to have my first baby circumcised on the fourth day after birth?
That is a good question!
What I found through Bible study is that that ancient command that became law was overruled by the “better covenant” that Jesus made possible (Hebrews 7:22). It was a hot topic when Gentiles were recognized as Christians in the New Testament even though they were uncircumcised.
In 1 Corinthians 7:19 the Apostle Paul instructs…
Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God's commands is what counts.
So, today, there is not a biblical principle that either supports or denies infant circumcision.
What about health issues?
There are a lot of opinions concerning health of an uncircumcised child (man) vs. a circumcised child (man). I advise that you review the information on infant circumcision yourself by doing a search of health concerns relating to infant circumcision before you make the decision. Basically, the decision is totally up to you.
In my experience, my boys haven’t had any problems relating to being circumcised and they didn’t seem to experience pain during the procedure. They weren’t too crazy about being held down to do it, but they were not too accepting of the nurses pumping blood out of their heals for standard blood tests either. I am totally comfortable with my decision to have my boys circumcised.
