Disciplining Children and Teens in a Christian Family

Disciplining children isn’t any fun for the parent or the child, but it is necessary. It is a part of training your children to go the way that they should. There are tons of scriptures about discipline in the Bible.

I recommend that every parent read all of the scriptures relating to discipline. You can find them by using a Bible concordance . Most Bibles contain one, or you can get one from a Christian book distributor or use an online concordance .

Disciplining Chidren The Bible says…

“He who spares the rod hates his son; but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.” (Proverbs 13:24)

and

“Discipline your son, for in that there is hope, do not be a willing party to his death.” (Proverbs 19:18)

Read in context, this is talking about not only life on earth, but also eternity. Disciplining children is a huge part of Christian parenting.

Discipline with a sense of love…

In my studies of discipline I have learned that you should never discipline a child when you are angry. The child should understand that discipline is a part of your love for him. Speaking the love languages is very important in addition to discipline.

Family views on discipline...

In a traditional family, one consisting of a father and mother, everything is somewhat balanced. The parents may disagree about discipline because of the nature of mothers and fathers. Most fathers view parenting as preparing the children for the future (at outward motive) and most mothers have an inward motive because of the nature of nurturing.

In a single parenting home , things can get difficult. As a single parent, a man may concentrate too much on discipline and not provide enough nurturing. A woman may provide too much nurturing and not enough discipline.

Step parenting is a whole new ballgame when it comes to disciplining children.

  • Should a step parent discipline their step children?
  • If only the natural parent disciplines their own children, will there be a perception of unfairness among the children?
  • How does a step parent develop parental authority in their home?

These are all difficult questions with no precise answers. It all depends on your individual circumstances. You may get ideas from Christian parenting resources and perhaps by getting family counseling from a Christian counselor.

You will benefit from resources on disciplining children…

Here are some articles and resources that will help to decide how to discipline your children in a traditional home, when single parenting or when step parenting…
