Christian chat rooms and forums can be tremendous source for encouragement when leading a Christian life. They can also provide information, as well as being inspiring.
When Christian parenting, it is extremely important that you are informed about what your children and teens are viewing on the internet and what information they might release, so you may feel uncomfortable about introducing them to chat rooms.
What is a chat room?
It is basically a website on the internet that allows people to “chat” online in real time. Most chat rooms are dedicated to a particular topic. Some are monitored and some are not.
What is a forum?
An online forum is a lot like a chat room only the content that is typed in is posted on a public message board and are open for discussion. It does not have the “real time” feature.
Safety precautions on opening your home up to Christian chat…
If you allow your children to chat online, they do need to be educated not to release any personal information including their last name, the name of their school, their address, phone number, or email address. And, not to ever tell anybody that they are home alone.
There are a lot of pedophiles and antagonists online looking for innocence to corrupt, so be cautious. Be aware when your kids are online and stay in touch with what they are doing.
Chat rooms and forums are an excellent resource for adults, but when it comes to kids and especially teens, the benefits quickly decline.
If they are really chatting with Christians, teen chat can boost their self-esteem and help them to achieve Biblical advice about things that they may feel uncomfortable about when talking to people that they know.
For kids that want to chat, I suggest setting yourself, your child and some other people that you know and trust up on a program like MSN Messenger rather than allowing them to enter a chat room. Overall, stay informed about what your children and teens are doing online and who they are talking to.
